IGNOU to launch Smart Card System
NEW DELHI -- The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will soon launch a smart card system, first of its kind in the country, for about 13 lakh students pursuing higher studies in the varsity.
The smart card will carry information on the student's admission, projects, assignments, attendance, practicals and semester results.
"The smart card will help to keep an authentic record of the academic activity of a student in the varsity and also help in the monitoring of students on an individual basis," IGNOU Vice Chancellor V N Rajasekharan Pillai said.
Each student will be provided with a smart card which will have a unique password. These smart cards can be used only on specified computers having the software to read the data.
Initially, the varsity will issue 100 cards to the management students on a trial basis.
IGNOU to launch online Vocational Courses

New Delhi: Now there is no need for enrolling in a specific colleges for pursuing vocational or job-oriented course. The Indira Gandhi. National Open University (IGNOU) has recently decided to provide vocational courses to the students online. For this purpose, the varsity is also setting up 8,000 teleknowledge centres in small towns and villages.
Said V K Arora, Director, IGNOU. ''These centres will be connected with IGNOU through internet. Experts at the university would impart vocational skills to a resource person in the centre, who would in turn train the rural youth on a variety of areas like pottery, carpentry, mechanics and handicrafts."
According to university sources, students will have an access to online portal. The portal will have full details of the training programme besides learning material and resource database for specific areas of study. The students can also access the details of tools and processes needed to produce specific material on it.
In this project, the university would be assisted by various NGOs too. "Our aim is to enhance the employable skills of the youth and make them earn better. To ensure that the skills are learnt correctly, we will tie up with many NGOs to assess the learners," added Mr. Arora.
AIU ties up with foreign varsities for faculty exchange programme

New Delhi: The scholars and faculty members of universities across the country can now visit varsities in France and Australia for collaborative research. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has entered into an agreement with the varsities of France and Australia for an exchange programme for faculty.
The aim of this programme would be to boost educational and cultural exchanges among the three countries.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is a public university established in 1985 by an act of the Indian Parliament [2] (Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985) to provide access to quality higher education through distance learning to remote and disadvantaged students. It helps in democratization of education in India. The university has been mandated to maintain the standard of distance learning in the country. It provides distance learning in a variety of disciplines including computer science, engineering, health sciences, law, humanities, social sciences, and agriculture. Today it serves about 1.5 million students in India and 35 countries abroad. IGNOU has 11 Schools and a network of 58 regional centres, 7 sub-regional centres, 1400 study centres, and 41 overseas centres. About 10% of all students enrolled in higher education in India are enrolled with IGNOU. Apart from teaching and research, extension and training form the mainstay of its academic activities. It also acts as a national resource centre, and more importantly, promotes and maintains standards of distance education. The Commonwealth of Learning has recognised it as one of its centres of excellence. IGNOU hosts the Secretariats of the SAARC Consortium of Open Distance Learning (SACODiL) and the Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET) initially promoted by UNESCO.
IGNOU offers certificate, diploma, graduate, post-graduate, and Ph.D. distance education courses. Its regional centres include Indian air force, army, and navy recognized centres.
IGNOU was the first university in India to provide its students with a virtual campus. Students. The university is named after two-time Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi and is the world's largest university.
