GE Aviation scouts for MRO ally in India
Bs Reporter / Mumbai January 05, 2007
GE Aviation, one of the world's leading manufacturers of jet engines for civil and military aircraft, plans strategic tieups with suppliers from India for sourcing of materials.
The firm is also looking at establishing relationships with Air-India and Indian Airlines for local engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities.
GE had early committed $20 million investment in an engine shop as part of a $8.1 billion deal by Air-India to acquire 68 airplanes from Boeing.
GE will be supplying engines to Air-India for this mega deal.
William Blair, Country Director—GE Aviation, India said, "The demand we are witnessing for GE engines is outstanding.
In India, GE Aviation is witnessing strong growth powered by a significant number of engine orders from a number of Indian carriers such as Air India, Indian, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, GO Air and Paramount Airways."
This engine major is enhancing its overall engine production by more than 60 per cent between 2007 and 2009 due to growing demand for its large commercial engines, the GE90 and GEnx, as well as continued growth of CFM56 and CF34 engines.
In February 2006, Air India had ordered GE engines valued at more than $2.2 billion at list price to power its new Boeing 777 and 787 fleets.
Delivery of GE90-115B engines for the Boeing 777-300ERs ordered by Air-India will begin by March 2007.
Air India had ordered eight Boeing 777-200LRs and 15 Boeing 777-300ERs, all powered by the GE90-115B engine.
Delivery of the GEnx engines for Air-India's fleet of Boeing 787-800 aircraft will begin by the third quarter of 2008.
Air-India had ordered 27 Boeing 787-8 aircraft, all powered by the GEnx engine.
For Jet Airways, GE has committed initial deliveries of the CF6-80E engine for the Airbus A330 fleet by March 2007.
Jet Airways had selected GE's CF6-80E1 engines to power its 10 Airbus A330-200 aircraft in February 2006. The value of the engine order is more than $300 million.
Jet Airways has also ordered 10 GE90-115B-powered Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with initial deliveries beginning April 2007.
